Debian 1

Debian is a fully open-source Linux OS based on 2.6.x kernel (Lenny is running on 2.6.26). Debian features over 18000 packages as estimated in 2009. Debian also features support 11 hardware architectures (i386, ia64, amd64, PowerPC, Sparc, MIPS, S390, etc.). Multi-architecture ISO images are also available.
Debian also supports graphical and text-based installation. PXE will run with text-based installations. Debian is also downloadable from various protocols including HTTP, Bit Torrent, Jigdo. Debian is also installable from CDs, DVDs, USB Sticks, netinst, PXE, etc. Packages supported include GNOME, KDE, OpenOffice.org, Aptitude, Disk Encryption.

To run Debian efficiently, we need a 1GHz P4 or equivalent processor with 256MB of RAM and 1GB of free storage. Recommended requirements are 512MB of RAM and 5GB of free storage. Debian can coexist with other operating systems, i.e. Windows.

Debian can be downloaded from debian.org > Getting Debian. You can both download or buy Debian CD/DVD sets. Business card ISOs are for business card sized CD/DVDs. It is recommended to download Debian during off-peak hours.
